Jim Gordon’s Eclectic Hour or Two: Episode 1

Jim Gordon’s Eclectic Hour or Two

Jim Gordon is RadioIDL’s newest musical host, recording his shows in Bergen, Norway for Tulsa’s RadioIDL.com.  He is a long-time singer/songwriter, and a psychologist/ psychodramatist using a structured approach to therapy by encouraging people to act through conflicts and traumatic experiences to reach resolution and better mental health.

Jim sings a variety of styles, but as his voice matured it seems that country rock describes his genre best.  With the influences of “Backroom Boys” Doug Morter and Jerry Donahue, he found his style and voice.

Jim was the lead guitarist with the Irish pop group, “The Trade” in the late ’60s.  Originally from Limavady and Portstewart in Northern Ireland, Jim moved to England in 1971 and joined the band, “Blue Epitaph”, producing “Ode by Blue Epitaph” on Holyground Records (Britain’s first independent Record label – now a highly valued collector’s item and re-released twice in CD format 2003).  In 2007, “Blue Epitaph” appeared at the Bretton Hall Fringe concert for Holyground Records, resulting in a CD and DVD release entitled “The Last Goodbye”.

In 1978, the band “Magus” was formed with Pete Howells.  It resulted in one album, “Breezing Away”. “Magus” toured extensively, appearing on BBC radio and television, at Covent Garden and was in concert with Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) and Julie Felix.  Pete and Jim also founded the band “Household Names” in London in 1980.  Receiving a lot of attention on the London scene, the band was described by “Time Out” as a blend of rock, folk, reggae, and dance.

He moved his family to Norway in 1982

Tragedy touched his family after a house fire took the life of their daughter. His nine-month-old infant daughter, Maria was diagnosed with heart failure shortly after.  Jim and his wife learned Maria’s survival required a new heart for her to live. Baby Maria was the third youngest in the world to have a heart transplant. The Norwegian community surrounded the family with support.  Another grieving family made a selfless decision to donate their infant’s heart upon the death of their baby. Maria lived 10 more years because of this medical miracle.  He became very active with the Heart Association. The European Heart Association recognized Jim’s creative talents and adopted his song, “Don’t Take Your Heart to Heaven” as their theme regarding the importance of organ donations.

Jim’s first solo CD “Dreaming Again” produced by Doug Morter, was released in 2000.  The CD led to guest appearances on BBC Radio, Ulster in Belfast and other live works in Ireland.  Additional airplay was heard on Norway’s NRK P1, NRK local radios, BBC Radio 2, and Radio Scotland.  He toured extensively with Doug as a duo.

In June 2004, “The Jim Gordon Band” was formed with Ole Amund Gjersvik, Helge Nyheim, and Arild Seim from Bergen, Norway.  The new CD “Scenic Tours in the Darkness” was released on Acoustic Records (ACR 9823).  Jerry Donahue contributed two solos to the album as a special guest.

For the last few years, he has focused on songwriting and helping younger Norwegian artists develop their skills.  One of these collaborations has resulted in the 2014 CD from RUUD, “Following Dreams”, with excellent exposure in the Norwegian national press and TV.

His latest album was released in 2016 on all digital outlets is “Candle in the Darkness”.

When listening to his shows and podcasts, it is clear that Jim speaks from the heart as he shares personal stories of triumphs and tragedies. His life and music continue to reach many on both sides of the “pond”.
